Pizza Rustica South Beach

Pizza Rustica opened on the corner of 9th and Washington in 1996 and is still one of the longest-running slice shops in South Beach. It is chef-driven and locally owned, and the slices are rectangular and oversized — a single loaded slice is closer to a small meal than a snack, so two people can usually split three or four and leave full. It is also one of the rare Washington Avenue spots where a full meal will not wreck your budget.

The kitchen makes dough and sauce from scratch every day and keeps no freezers on site, which is the short version of why the pizza tastes fresher than the average late-night counter. Expect San Marzano tomatoes, whole-milk mozzarella, chicken roasted in-house, and more than 35 varieties, from a classic Margherita to a loaded mega-meat. Gluten-free crust and vegan cheese are available, along with a wide run of vegetarian and vegetable slices — not a given at a late-night pizza window.

What to order

The namesake Rustica pizza (about $29 for a whole pie) is the one to try first: prosciutto, artichoke hearts, kalamata olives, and sun-dried tomatoes, with the prosciutto and greens layered on after baking, the way it is done in Italy. Individual slices run roughly $6 to $11 and most whole pizzas land in the $25–$29 range. Beyond pizza there are salads, pizza sandwiches, chicken wings, and Nutella dessert pizzas, so a mixed group rarely has to compromise. You can order at the counter or online for pickup and delivery.

Hours and when to go

Pizza Rustica is open every day from 11 AM, closing at 3 AM Sunday through Thursday and 5 AM on Friday and Saturday. Those hours are the whole point: this is the pizza you get after the beach, between bars on Washington Avenue, or well after most South Beach kitchens have shut down for the night.
